My First Newsletter

Here’s a facsimile of my first newsletter, just in case you aren’t subscribed and it hasn’t already landed in your inbox.  This is where I should be able to say: Subscribe here!  But this is still a work in progress.

I am in the process of revising my new book after getting great feedback from my agent. I hope to finish this draft in June. Here’s a brief synopsis: A Catalogue of Birds begins with water, as Alice Bliss does.  There’s a large Irish Catholic family with five kids. It’s 1966 and the Viet Nam war changes everything.

Where’s Alice Bliss?

Alice Bliss is at your local bookstore, in Denmark and Italy (where I’m corresponding with readers – in Italian! – via Twitter) and in the UK where it has been seen on the London Tube as part of Books on the Underground.  Books on the Underground is as simple as it sounds. Books traveling around the London Underground waiting to be read. “Think of us as your local library, but without the late fees. Just be sure to put them back when you’ve finished.”

Milestones:

We have just passed the two year anniversary of the launch of Alice Bliss and my events are winding down. It has been an amazing ride. Thanks to everyone who organized, attended or invited me to an event.

Alice Bliss, the musical!

Jenny Giering, composer
Adam Gwon, lyricist

Our team (music: Jenny Giering, lyrics: Adam Gwon, book: me) spent a week at Goodspeed Musicals in East Haddam, CT in February, courtesy of the Johnny Mercer Foundation. While there we revised our outline and wrote six scenes and four songs. We were invited to a second residency at the Weston Playhouse in Vermont for a week in May where we made some headway into Act Two.  And we will be going to a third residency in Rhinebeck, NY in July. Here’s how this works: Isolate the writers in a remote location, feed them well, send them a killer snowstorm or turn off the WiFi. Amazing what you can get done. We will finish the first draft of the musical in July. Then we will be scheduling our first workshop at Playwrights Horizons in NY.
If you’d like to read more about the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, we are in some great company, once again: rhinebeckwriters.org/we-welcome-our-2013-writers/
